Published Works of the Moorsfield Press
from the Collections of the
Clinton County Historical Association
When
Woody and Hulda McLellan died in the early 1980s, their
historical collection went to Special Collections at
Feinberg Library, Plattsburgh State University College
and the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA)
in Plattsburgh.
The McLellan Collection at CCHA
consists of McLellan family photographs taken in
Champlain and other localities. Some
photographs from this collection were used in the
Champlain Historic Calendar series (2003-2017).
The collection also contains printed material from
the Moorsfield Press. The items were printed
by Hugh, Malcolm and Woody McLellan between 1919 and
1980. The prints below
represent the museum's collection of Moorsfield Press
printings.
The
images shown on this page are used with the written
permission of the Association. All
images are watermarked accordingly.

McLellan standing next to his "S. Cochran Inn"
sign. The sign has a Masonic symbol on it and
was found in Peru. The sign is now part of the
collection at CCHA. At right is Malcolm McLellan
(the great-grandfather of this website author) running
the press. The photos were taken in 1943 when
Woody McLellan (son of Hugh) was in the army.
Other copies of these photographs exist.

Christmas Cards
by
Hugh, Woody and Hulda (Bredenberg) McLellan
From the collections of
the Clinton County Historical Association
Hugh McLellan started printing Christmas cards
in the 1920s. The earliest one shown here
was made in 1926. He often printed
excerpts of letters from his family papers or
historical documents in the cards. His son
Woody and his wife Hulda continued this
tradition and often filled their cards with
tongue-in-cheek quips. The last card shown
here was published in 1981, two years before
Woody died. The cards are shown in
chronological order with many gaps in the early
years.

Press Movie Posters
CCHA owns
a small number of movie posters from the Lyceum and
Lyric Theaters in Champlain. The Lyceum started to
show movies in 1914. It was upstairs in the
former Session House owned by the McLellans and
rented to Mr. Kennedy. The former theater is
now the Knights of Columbus Hall on Oak Street in
Champlain. The Moorsfield Press printing office was
in the basement.
